چکیده

S U M M A R Y The migration and accumulation of magma beneath volcanoes often causes surface displacements that can be measured by geodetic techniques. Usually, deformation signals are explained using models with uniform mechanical properties. In this paper, we study surface displacements due to magma chamber inflation, using heterogeneous finite element models. We first present a systematic analysis of the influence of mechanical layering, showing that the stiffness contrast significantly affects the entity and the pattern of vertical and radial displacements. Second, as an example we apply the models to interpret ground displacements at Darwin volcano (Galápagos Islands) as revealed by InSAR data in the period 1992–1998. The considered models suggest that geodetic data interpreted using homogeneous models leads to underestimation of the source depth and volume change. Thus, we propose correction factors for the source parameters estimated by homogeneous models, in order to consider a range of variation due to mechanical layering as analysed in this study. The effect of the mechanical heterogeneities affects the correct understanding of geodetic data and also influences the evaluation of a volcanic hazard potential.

Investigating the topography effect in modeling of deformation field of CampiFlegrei volcano using the method of fundamental solution

Considering the importance of predicting volcano eruption and the large number of volcanic peaks across the world, having enough researches in this field is vital. Based on geodetic researches, surface deformation of the earth in the form of uplift or subsidence in the volcanic region, is an indicator of the  magma's movement respectively towards the crater or the exit from the tank around. In...

The effects of rheological layering on post-seismic deformation

S U M M A R Y We examine the effects of rheological layering on post-seismic deformation using models of an elastic layer over a viscoelastic layer and a viscoelastic half-space. We extend a general linear viscoelastic theory we have previously proposed to models with two layers over a half-space, although we only consider univiscous Maxwell and biviscous Burgers rheologies. In layered viscoela...

Static analysis of rectangular nanoplates using exponential shear deformation theory based on strain gradient elasticity theory

In this research, the bending analysis of rectangular nanoplates subjected to mechanical loading is investigated. For this purpose, the strain gradient elasticity theory with one gradient parameter is presented to study the nanoplates. From the best knowledge of authors, it is the first time that the exponential shear deformation formulation based on strain gradient elasticity theory is carried...

Vibration Analysis of FG Micro-Beam Based on the Third Order Shear Deformation and Modified Couple Stress Theories

In this paper, free vibration analysis and forced vibration analysis of FG doubly clamped micro-beams is studied based on the third order shear deformation and modified couple stress theories. The size dependent dynamic equilibrium equations and both the classical and non-classical boundary conditions are derived using a variational approach. It is assumed that all properties of the FG micro-be...

Allan variance applied to time series baseline results for GPS-based deformation monitoring applications

Deformation monitoring systems seek to detect constant movements with time, varying movements with time or a sudden movement. A slow movement at the millimetre level will not be detected by comparing consecutive session solutions due to inaccuracies between sessions. However, comparisons over several sessions, or days, or weeks, could highlight slow consistent changes. The Allan variance is int...
